From playing in the Gauteng Development League (GDL) with Randburg Football Club a few years ago, Ime Okon’s (21) future has been nothing short of a joy to watch.

The strong defender came up in the Randburg FC ranks and took South African football by storm. At the age of 18, back in 2023, Okon took a big jump in his football career. He spent one season with the SuperSport United Diski Challenge reserve team, before Supersport United first-team coach Gavin Hunt gave him a breakthrough.

Randburg chairperson Kevin Mudie always knew that the young player was destined for greatness, once describing Okon as an outstanding, humble young man. “He deserves the success he gets, as well as what’s coming. He has a very bright future ahead of him. We are hoping that one day he will go to Europe,” said Mudie in 2023.

He continued to work hard in the Betway Premiership, attracting big teams in South Africa and in Europe. The sensational teenager’s name was being praised by many while in the first team, resulting in national team coach Hugo Broos selecting him in his preliminary.

The Randburg FC graduate was part of the national team that recently played the COSAFA Cup. Donning national colours, he scored one goal in the tournament and helped Bafana Bafana reach the finals.
Now, Okon laces up for Hanover. An adventure all South African soccer fans will be watching with anticipation.
