Honeydew crime stats show mixed trend changes

SAPS crime stats show Honeydew remains prominent in many categories, including a worrying rise in drunk driving incidents over the past quarter.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) has released its quarterly crime statistics for the fourth quarter of the 2024/2025 financial year, covering the period from January to March 2025.

These statistics are crucial for informing policy development and planning within the criminal justice system. Notably, the report ranks the stations based on their crime statistics, with the station at the top having the most criminal activities in their area, and the station at the bottom having the least.
In the police stations around Randburg, Honeydew was mentioned in most categories, with stats showing increases and decreases compared to the previous quarter.

In property-related crime, which refers to crimes during which tangible property of an individual or institution is taken by criminal elements without permission, and in the absence of the owner/custodian of such property, Honeydew saw an decrease to 388 cases reported, compared to 545 in the previous year. They also saw a nine count increase in kidnapping cases, from 27 in 2024 to 36. Honeydew did see a 2 count decrease in burglary related crimes, from 47 last year to 45 this year.
Honeydew saw a decrease of 35.3% in vehicle and motor cycle theft, compared to last years count of 150, while thefts from and out of motor vehicles saw a 70 count decrease from the 210 count from last year.

Other serious crimes, such as shoplifting and commercial crimes, saw a 4.3% increase, taking it from 696 in 2024 to 726 this year.

Motorists in Honeydew found driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs increased by 47 counts from 39 in 2024 to 86 counts.
