Zandspruit awaits action after premier visit

Zandspruit residents welcomed a visit from the premier’s office to assess poor service delivery and collapsing infrastructure first-hand.

Zandspruit residents were visited by representatives of the premier’s office on July 22. This follows a community memorandum raising an extreme lack of service delivery in the area, delivered to representatives of the Gauteng premier and the Johannesburg mayor during a peaceful march to the Honeydew Police Station on June 27.

Despite the cold, people began assembling, holding signs and chanting as they walked from Zandspruit to the Honeydew Police Station. They were accompanied by officers and members of the Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD), who helped ensure the march remained peaceful and orderly.

Ward 114 councillor David Mangena led the march, addressing the crowd, and thanking everyone for their discipline, and for showing up despite the freezing weather. “Thank you for not causing any damage or chaos. This is for Zandspruit, not for me, not for any individual, but for the entire community.”

A month after the councillor led residents on the march, he once again availed himself to lead a delegation from the premier’s office, starting at Emthonjeni, and moving through key areas, such as Mbele Street, Wolf Street, the transit camp, and the clinic, and concluding at Masakhane Primary School and Ext 9 and 10.

The purpose of the visit was for the representatives to see firsthand the issues that were listed in the memorandum, including collapsed infrastructure and clogged toilets.

Mangena said: “I am happy that they are so eager to help. They will now sit down with the City of Johannesburg and will come back to the community of Zandspruit to discuss the next steps within the next week.”
