Valley Road in North Riding needs special attention

Ward 134 councillor Devon Steenkamp will gather departments to visit and discuss solutions for Valley Road in North Riding.

Ward 134 councillor Devon Steenkamp is concerned about the state of Valley Road in North Riding.

The gravel road is in a bad state and unsafe for residents who drive on it daily. The sides of the road have a massive, deep-waterway trench caused by the constant flow of water. The road has also seen an increase in water leaks and has had sewer issues in the past.

Steenkamp added that earlier this year, with heavy rains, the road was in a much worse condition.

“At least the rains have slowed down, and some grading has been done by the JRA department; it’s a little bit more drivable. But what I’m most concerned about is the rainy season. If we do not try and do some sort of proactive preventative measures to keep water away from the middle of the road, we’re going to have problems.”

There are currently two unattended water leaks on both sides of the road that are creating trenches. Steenkamp said that he will continue to log calls and will try to organise getting departments together to do a walkabout.

“We will walk with the departments, identifying all these issues and asking them to come up with solutions.”

He added that they understand sometimes there are budget implications and that it may take a long time to get an actual proper stormwater system and resurface the road, so that will be a long-term goal.

“These leaks need to be resolved very quickly so that we can just focus on restructuring the road to try and make the road a bit safer and to stop the wastage of water.”

Spionkop Avenue is also affected by a water leak. The stagnant water has also caused dangerous potholes that are filled with water and are dangerous for motorists.

“It is dangerous that people are getting stuck; there are businesses that are affected because people don’t want to enter the area. There are some guest houses I can understand that are struggling with trying to attract tourism; things like these hinder their businesses.”
