Rainbow Line Dancers bring the music for the Gold Event

Blairgowrie’s Gold Event promises fun for all ages, with The Last Shanty, country dancing, and a celebration of togetherness on the dance floor.

The Gold Event, at Blairgowrie Recreation Centre on September 13, will be more than a showcase of dance; it will be a chance for families to connect and share a memorable experience. One of the main attractions will be The Last Shanty dance, an activity that promises laughter, energy, and plenty of smiles.

Rainbow Line dancing instructor and event organiser Leon Nel describes The Last Shanty as a lively Irish song with a cheerful beat and steps that anyone can pick up. “The Last Shanty is so much fun. It’s an Irish song with happy music, and it’s easy to learn and dance.”

Nel and his team have already been introducing the dance in their regular classes, as well as at public demonstrations. He believes its appeal lies, not only in the music and movement, but also in the opportunity it gives people to connect with one another. “Families need to have fun together. People don’t talk to each other anymore because of cell phones and technology.”

The dance can be done with a family member or friend, and Nel hopes to see parents, children, and even grandparents taking to the floor together. “We want a fun and happy room full of people. It’s about sharing time, making eye contact, and enjoying the moment together.”

Those who wish to participate are encouraged to prepare in advance. A video of the dance will be made available so participants can learn the steps, and arrive ready to join in. While it’s designed for beginners, a little practice will make the experience more enjoyable.

The Gold Event will also feature line dancing and couples’ country dancing, creating a varied programme suitable for all ages and skill levels. Spectators are welcome, with entry set at R80 per person, which includes access to all performances.

Nel hopes the night will leave people, not only entertained, but also inspired to put down their devices, and spend quality time with loved ones. As he puts it: “Dancing together is simple, it’s fun, and it’s something everyone can do. We want to see the community enjoying that together.”
