Local boxer finds her rhythm as she takes her first six-round bout

Tyla Promnick won her fifth fight, her first six-round bout, and continues to make a name for herself in a boxing world.

Tyla ‘Duracell Bunny’ Promnick, a boxer coming out of the respected Alan Toweel gym in Linden, continues her winning streak with yet another victory against Yonelisa Poni.

This was Promnick’s first six-round bout with a seasoned opponent. She went the distance as the fight was decided on the cards, taking her numbers up to five wins with three knockouts.

She admitted that Poni was, by far, the most seasoned opponent she had face up to date. She explained that they knew her fitness would be much better than her previous opponents, as she has gone 10 rounds for the South African title previously. “We knew experience would be her deadliest weapon. From the start, I knew I needed to out work her. Make her miss and move around her like a little Duracell bunny. I definitely think I achieved this. Although there’s still so much, I can improve on, I do believe my punch rate broke her morale very early on in the fight.”

As they went into the second round, Promnick kept making Poni miss and kept moving forward aggressively. That was when she noticed Poni’s demeanour break. “She realised her shots weren’t landing, and the ones that did, did absolutely nothing to me. Meanwhile, my shots were slowly making her falter. She was quite cocky in the start of the fight, putting her head against mine in the face off in the ring, so I knew I had to break her spirit.”
It’s no secret that Promnick has improved drastically since her debut. As she climbs the ladder, she is now in line for a South African title shot. “I’ve slowly but surely noticed improvements in every aspect of myself as a fighter, however my ring IQ has improved more. I have felt ready for a title shot for a while now. I’m my mind, that belt is already mine.

“The title would mean absolutely everything. The first belt of many to come. My whole career has been waiting for this point, the first step to bigger things and even greater titles. From my debut to now, I have been waiting for this moment.”

The young boxer took on her first six-round with ease. Now, she has more energy to go even further. “I feel like I get better as the round goes on. Six rounds felt no different from four, and I constantly felt like I could go another six if I had to. I felt so strong, and personally feel like I got my rhythm as the rounds went by.”
