No solution for a 2 year leak on Kelly Avenue
Joburg Water has not attended to a major water leak on Kelly Avenue in Boskruin.
After two years of reporting and escalating concerns by the ward councillor and residents, the water leak on Kelly Avenue in Boskruin remains unresolved and has still not been attended to by Joburg Water.
Water has been gushing from an underground pipe, creating a pond next to a resident’s fence.
Resident Andrew Usher has been reporting the leak since early 2024 and is frustrated by the amount of clean water wasted.

“I have sent emails from May 2024, which included a video and a pin drop of the location; I did receive two reference numbers, but no responses. I then went and physically looked at the area and took a video,” he said.Usher added that there have been no signs of Joburg Water on site despite repeated reports.
“I walk here weekly and always check if it’s done. I’ve been reporting it for two years, and eventually, when I send emails, they bounce back saying their boxes are full. Even the alternative email they gave is full. They’re not receiving the emails.”
Joburg Water was sent questions about the issue on March 22. They promised to respond within their standard turnaround time of 24 to 48 hours, depending on the complexity of the matter and input required from technical departments. Their response will be published once available.

Ward 134 councillor Devon Steenkamp said he will continue to monitor the situation and push for urgent intervention.
“There is a significant amount of clean water currently being wasted on Kelly Avenue, which is deeply concerning given the ongoing pressure on our water infrastructure.

I have engaged with community members who witnessed the leak and guided them on how to log the fault with Johannesburg Water so that a formal reference number can be issued. This is critical to ensure the matter is tracked and acted upon.”
Steenkamp added that he has alerted the Urban Inspector to ensure the issue is formally captured on the system and escalated to the relevant entity.
