No solution for leak on Pretoria Avenue

Water leak on Pretoria Avenue in Ferndale remains a concerning issue for the ward councillor and residents.

Despite ongoing efforts from Ward 102 councillor Bea Campbell-Cloete and residents, the burst water pipe on Pretoria Avenue has yet to be fixed.

Campbell-Cloete said that at this stage, the entity’s repair timelines remain unclear, which is unacceptable given that the burst occurred in early March and remains unresolved.

Clean water continues to gush from the ruptured pipe, sending thousands of litres flowing wastefully down the street. This latest incident is not an isolated case.

Pretoria Avenue has become increasingly known for recurring pipe bursts, with residents estimating this to be the third or fourth occurrence in recent years. The repeated failures have raised concerns in the community.

Johannesburg Water spokesperson Nombuso Shabalala said that they are aware of the leak, and no repairs have been done.

“We were told the team is going out to come and fix it, but weeks later, nothing has been done. The water is still running. I am pushing for this to be prioritised as it is unacceptable,” said Campbell-Cloete.

She added that, in a city already facing water shortages, the continuous loss of water due to infrastructure failure and slow response times is both irresponsible and avoidable.

“It is unacceptable that repairs can remain unattended for this long and entities, as well as the City of Johannesburg, are not aware of these or have no answers on when work will be completed.”

Further down the street, there is a reinstatement that hasn’t been attended to for years. The councillor is concerned about safety as it is across from a school.

“It poses a danger to the school and residents. The soil is now caving around the pipe, and how long is it going to be before the pipe collapses and nothing is being done?”

Questions were sent to Joburg Water’s communication team on April 1, and they apologised for the delayed response. They are currently following up with the relevant depot to obtain the necessary information. Their response will be published once made available.
