Children at Grannies House Nursery School in Blairgowrie rolled up their sleeves to mark Earth Day with a hands-on celebration of environmental awareness.
The event, organised by principal Thandolwenkosi Ncube and her staff, centred on teaching children practical ways to care for the planet, from picking up litter to growing plants and conserving water.

“Today we are celebrating Earth Day,” said Ncube. “We are teaching kids how to clean our earth, how to grow plants, not to litter, and not to waste water.”
One of the highlights of the morning was a creative recycling activity in which children made flowers from discarded egg trays. Children cut the trays into sections, painted them, and attached small branches as stems, turning everyday waste into colourful decorations.

“We didn’t waste anything,” said Ncube. “We used the small branches and the egg trays, and the kids painted their Earth using their hands.”
The activity was designed to show the youngest learners that recycling is not complicated; it starts with looking at what you already have before throwing it away.

Children also took part in a litter-picking exercise on the school grounds, collecting scraps of paper as part of a lesson about personal responsibility.
“Kids were picking up papers from the ground to make it clean, so that they know that next time, if you throw something on the ground, you have to pick it up,” said Ncube. “And if you see any paper outside on the street, you have to pick it up to make our Earth clean.”
The school’s Earth Day activities reflect a growing emphasis on environmental education in early childhood learning, with educators recognising that habits formed in the early years often last a lifetime.
