Greendale House Palliative and Hospice Care makes every moment matter

Greendale House Palliative and Hospice Care continues to provide comfort, support, and hope to patients and families.

Greendale House Palliative and Hospice Care is a compassionate care facility dedicated to providing dignity, comfort, and support to patients facing life-limiting illnesses.

With a patient-centred approach, the organisation offers professional palliative and hospice care services tailored to meet the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of both patients and their families.

CEO Jacqui Kaye explained that Greendale was established to improve the quality of life for people living with life-threatening and life-limiting illnesses. “Since opening in Johannesburg in 1979 as South Africa’s first hospice, our focus has remained on helping patients live as fully, comfortably, and meaningfully as possible.”

Formerly known as HospiceWits, the organisation changed its name to better reflect its values, and to clear up misunderstandings about its scope of services. Kaye said the old name led some to believe they focused solely on end-of-life care or were associated with the University of the Witwatersrand. “Greendale House highlights a broader, more accurate reflection of the care offered. We’re more than just a hospice; we are a community partner providing support at every stage of the journey.”

Driven by a mission to enhance quality of life, Greendale House creates a warm and supportive environment where individuals receive personalised care, delivered by a committed team of healthcare professionals, caregivers, and volunteers.

They offer a wide range of care options through a multidisciplinary team, including home-based palliative care, an in-patient unit (IPU), counselling, and training. “Our name shows the range of support we offer to people at all stages of a life-limiting or life-threatening illness. Our IPU in Houghton is known as Greendale House, as it was purchased through funding from the Greendale Trust, and we wanted to retain our identity and keep ourselves connected to our past.”

Greendale House believes that every individual deserves compassionate care and respect throughout every stage of their journey. Through community partnerships and ongoing support initiatives, the organisation continues to make a meaningful impact on the lives of many families. “Our care places a high value on the wishes of each individual. We aim to care not only for the physical needs of patients, but also for their emotional, psychological, social, and spiritual well-being, while supporting their families and other people who love and care for them.”

He added that a massive part of what they do is enabling people to live the lives they want in the time they have left. “We never believe there is nothing more that can be done. Even when cure is no longer possible, there is always care, comfort, support, and keeping people connected with the world.”

As a trusted name in palliative and hospice care, Greendale House remains committed to serving the community with empathy, professionalism, and unwavering dedication to holistic care.
