The event drew participants from Stephenson’s Primary School and Boipuso Primary School, as well as learners who attended through the Kolang Aftercare programme, based in Zandspruit.

Though some schools that had initially confirmed their attendance were unable to take part on the day, organisers said the turnout was still a success. Throughout the competitions, learners displayed strong knowledge, confidence, and public speaking ability, with the day designed to give young people a platform to challenge themselves academically, while developing leadership and communication skills.

Sanele Mkhize, from the Sunflower organisation, who co-ordinates the after-school programme at Peu Ya Mohau, said the competitions offered learners far more than a chance to win. “These programmes offer much more than academic enrichment. They help learners build confidence, develop leadership and communication skills, discover their talents, and realise that they are capable of achieving great things beyond the classroom.”

She added that Peu Ya Mohau’s work goes beyond organising events. “We mentor learners, follow up on their progress, and continuously equip them with the skills and confidence needed to succeed in future opportunities. Most importantly, we create a safe and enjoyable environment where children can learn, connect with others, and create lasting memories.”

Mkhize called on parents, schools, and local organisations across Cosmo City to partner with the programme in supporting young people. “Investing in our children today is investing in the future of our community.”
