Blairgowrie Primary learners shine at spelling bee
Blairgowrie Primary School hosted its Bee Brilliant spelling bee, with learners showing confidence and skill in front of judges and their peers.
Blairgowrie Primary School held its Bee Brilliant spelling bee competition, giving Grade 5 and 6 learners the chance to show off their spelling, vocabulary and public speaking skills.
The competition forms part of the school’s Intermediate Phase programme and aims to identify the top three learners who will go on to represent the school at the Khula Spelling Bee Competition.

Hlengiwe Ntamane from Khula Let’s Grow Together attended the event as a judge. She said the experience was different from her usual role, but a rewarding one to watch.
“It was awesome. You know, being a judge, it was just something different other than me hosting, but it was beautiful to see all these kids, you know, nailing it and being confident and doing the best, really,” she said.
Ntamane said the learners handled the pressure of the final round well, even when faced with tricky words.
“Yeah, you could see that they got, like, so nervous, but then they kept calm, you know. I’m so proud of them,” she said.
She praised the school’s teachers for the role they played in preparing the learners for the competition.

“I think the teachers have done an incredible job, you know, by helping them, assisting them in every way, but it helps boost their confidence as well. I could see that towards the end, they were really, like, getting their A game,” she said.
Among the learners taking part was Midzuno Mathonsi, who described the competition as a nerve-wracking but enjoyable challenge.
“So, the competition today was spelling words in front of everyone,” Midzuno said. “It was good and fun.”
Midzuno went on to win the competition and said the news came as a pleasant surprise.
“I felt super happy.”
Midzuno will now represent Blairgowrie Primary School at the Khula Spelling Bee Competition in September, and admitted to feeling a mix of excitement and nerves ahead of the next round.
“Nervous,” Midzuno said when asked about the upcoming competition.
