Learners shine in Cosmo City Spelling Bee

Kwena Molapo High School learners claimed the top two positions at the Cosmo City Spelling Bee, a competition aimed at inspiring teenagers from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Khula Let’s Grow Together hosted its third annual Spelling Bee competition in Cosmo City, bringing together schools and the community for a day of learning and celebration.

The non-profit organisation, which focuses on mentoring teenagers from disadvantaged backgrounds, partnered with three schools for this year’s event. Learners from Kwena Molapo High School, Far North Secondary, and other schools battled it out on stage.

Project manager and director of Khula Let’s Grow Together, Faith Sibande, said the competition is more than just entertainment.
“We work with schools and communities to help teenagers believe in themselves, to be confident, and to aim high. Events like these expose learners to new opportunities while they are learning and being entertained,” she said.

Sibande was delighted by the large turnout, which included parents and younger children.
“We are so happy to see the support. Even younger learners came to be inspired and motivated. Next year, we expect an even bigger crowd,” she added.

Kwena Molapo learners took top honours on the day, securing both first and second place. Their history teacher, Xolile Tambani, praised their effort.
“We were practising for four weeks after school, and it paid off. I’m proud of my learners. Competing like this gives them courage and shows them that they can do anything,” Tambani said.

The winner of the competition, Oratile Mose, a Grade 11 learner at Kwena Molapo, said she was overjoyed by the result.
“I feel happy and excited. We stayed after school to practise for weeks. I did the Spelling Bee back in primary school, but this was my first time in high school. Since I’ve won, I’ll consider doing more of these competitions,” she said.
