The protesters sang songs and chanted slogans outside the depot, while calling on management to address, what they described as, ongoing failures in waste collection services.
The demonstration was led by DA’s Johannesburg Mayoral candidate Helen Zille, alongside local ward councillors who joined in demanding accountability. The crowd gathered at the entrance to the depot and proceeded inside the building. DA representatives said residents had been left to deal with mounting rubbish and were demanding that the responsible entity restore reliable waste collection services.

Zille raised concerns about the lack of management presence at the facility. She confirmed that when the protesters arrived at the depot, they found no management officials on site. “The only person here is the receptionist, and they’re sitting with a pile of complaints, phoning residents and explaining how they will solve those issues. Where are all the managers? We are going to make sure that they are exposed. This is enough. They are having a nice time while residents are sitting with rubbish.”

The absence of management further fuelled frustration among protesters, who said officials should be available to account for the state of waste services in the area. “To all people who have not been serviced by this depot, we are on your side, and to Pikitup we will be back, and we will not accept this as the normal thing.”

Questions were sent to Pikitup regarding the claims made by protestors. Their response will be published once made available.
