Jukskei Park residents have been urged to monitor their pets closely following a series of dog poisonings on Thursday morning.

According to the Douglasdale Community Policing Forum (CPF), six dogs were affected, leaving four dead, while two recovered after receiving treatment from a vet. Pieces of mince suspected to contain poison were reportedly found in the area.

In a statement shared on social media, the Douglasdale CPF urged Jukskei Park residents to remain vigilant.

The Randburg Sun approached the CPF for further comment, and when asked whether the substance found in the mince had been confirmed as poison, the organisation said a veterinarian had confirmed it. The CPF stated that affected residents would report the matter to the South African Police Service (SAPS).

When asked whether there was any suspected motive behind the poisonings, such as a targeted attack or a dispute with a specific household, the CPF said there was none. It also said no similar incidents had been reported in Jukskei Park or nearby suburbs in the past six months.

Regarding symptoms to watch for, the CPF advised pet owners to be alert to vomiting and abnormal behaviour. The organisation said details of the veterinary practice that treated the surviving dogs were confidential and could not be shared.

The CPF’s safety flyer, circulated alongside the original alert, warned that perpetrators often throw poisoned meat, sausages and other food items over residents’ walls, sometimes laced with substances such as organophosphates or rat poison.

Residents were urged to secure their perimeters, avoid leaving dogs unsupervised outdoors, train their pets not to eat food from strangers or off the ground, and inspect their yards daily for suspicious items.

Anyone who spots suspicious activity is urged to report it to SAPS on 10111 or to the relevant emergency veterinary services.
