HTA students serve up world of flavours at annual food market

First-year chefs from the HTA School of Culinary Art in Ferndale showcased their skills at the school's annual gourmet food market.

Johannesburg’s next generation of culinary talent took centre stage on September 5, when the HTA School of Culinary Art in Ferndale welcomed family and friends to its annual gourmet food market.

First-year students transformed their training into a food experience, serving a variety of international flavours while showcasing their creativity, entrepreneurial skills and passion for the industry. The event was attended by family and friends, who came together to support the aspiring chefs as they showcased their culinary skills, creativity and entrepreneurial flair.

Duane Riley explained that guests enjoyed a selection of gourmet street food inspired by global cuisines. “The various student food concepts represented themes including South American, Korean, Mexican, Southern USA, North African, Middle Eastern, Southern African, Asian and Mediterranean cuisine, as well as an irresistible dessert and sweet category.”

The event featured family-style seating, music and a bar, creating an enjoyable afternoon for guests. Adding to the excitement, the students’ food concepts and creations were judged by industry professionals, giving the aspiring chefs the opportunity to showcase their talents and receive feedback.

“The annual gourmet food market provided an opportunity for HTA’s first-year students to put their training into practice while giving their families and friends a taste of the creativity and talent that represents the next generation of South African and world chefs. The event once again demonstrated that the future of the culinary industry is in good hands,” added Riley.
