Africa fights back in world cup
Ghana and Nigeria help their chances by surprising European teams – Residents share their views.
Ghana and Nigeria renewed their world cup hopes on day 10 of the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, 21 and 22 June.
Johannesburg residents provided their views on the matches (see below).
First Argentina ensured their progression to the round of 16 by beating Iran 1 – 0 in a group F match.
Messi, four times FIFA world player of the year, scored in injury time with a shot from 25m that curved around Iran keeper Haghighi.
Then Ghana and Germany drew 2 – 2 in a group G match that was one of the best matches yet in this world cup.
FIFA currently ranks Germany second in the world, and Ghana 37th.
Götze scored for Germany from a Müller cross in the 51st minute.
Then Ayew equalised for Ghana with a header from a cross in the 54th minute.
Asamoah Gyan put Ghana ahead in the 63rd minute to tie with former Cameroon striker Roger Milla as the top scoring African in world cup history (total of five world cup goals).
He finished well after Muntari’s pass set him up.
Miroslav Klose then wrote his own name in the world cup record books in nearly the boldest of pens, through a deflection from a corner in the 71st minute for Germany which tied him as leading goal scorer in world cups with with former Brazil striker Ronaldo (each scored 15 goals in world cups).
Nigeria then beast Bosnia and Herzegovina 1 – 0 in group F, which knocked the European team out of the world cup.
After Dzeko was incorrectly disallowed a goal for Bosnia and Herzegovina, for offside, Odemwingie scored in the 29th minute to give Nigeria the win.
Odemwingie shot hard into the goal after receiving a pass from Emenike who appeared to foul Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Spahic first, giving rise to controversy and agitation from players and fans.
Residents comment on Facebook:
Spokesperson for Randburg Football Club Marlon Abrahams said that in his personal view Argentina is the second most likely team to win the world cup.
He cited Argentina’s geographical proximity to Brazil, them being Brazil’s traditional rivals and the Messi factor as reasons for this.
