Hoërskool Randburg’s Derby Day

FONTAINEBLEAU – Two of Randburg’s finest high schools battle it out for the win.

Rugby was the name of the game at Hoërskool Randburg’s Derby Day against Hoërskool Linden on 14 June as teams went neck to neck in a clash for the Derby title.

The day began as the whistle blew at 8am sharp for the U14 A-team match, which Hoërskool Randburg won hands down 39 – 5.

The next two matches for the U15 and U16 A-teams went well in Hoërskool Linden’s favour, with the U15 A-team scoring 17 – 6, and the U16 A-team taking an unbelievable 24 – 0 win.

Hoërskool Randburg’s Old Boys club – ex-pupils and rugby players, as well as parents of current pupils – played a fun mock game against each other, much to the thrill of the crowd of students supporting on the pavilion.

Tension between the two schools slowly started mounting, as the big matches between the second and first teams drew nearer.

Hoërskool Randburg’s second team took an impressive 26 – 12 win over Hoërskool Linden’s second team.

But it was Hoërskool Linden’s first team that came out on top in the final match.

Although Hoërskool Randburg put up a strong defence, it wasn’t enough to stop Hoërskool Linden from leading the score 19 – 17 at the final whistle blow.

Coach Francois Vosloo from Hoërskool Linden stated that the day was put together superbly by Hoërskool Randburg, and that his school was honoured to be a part of it.

“Randburg played a tough game, and they definitely didn’t make it easy for us. But in the end, we’re very proud of the players from both teams,”said Vosloo.

Pietie Meyer, who coaches Hoërskool Randburg’s first team, felt that because it was such a tight game, it could have gone either way. “Even though the final score for the first teams stood at 19 – 17, the bigger picture is that we, together as a school, won the Derby trophy for the day,” said Meyer.
