Tyron triumphs in Q-School golf tournament
RANDBURG – Tyron McComb from Fourways triumphs.
RANDBURG – Tyron McComb from Fourways on 26 November triumphed in the IGT Tour’s seventh Race to Q-School.
The 23-year-old Dainfern golfer carded an even par 72 at Modderfontein Golf Club for a 13 under-par 203 aggregate, which was matched by
Werner van Niekerk from Pretoria, who closed with a three under 69.
Both players hit missed the fairway right on their second visit to the 18th tee.
Van Niekerk flew his approach 25 meters over green, while Mc Comb’s eight-iron approach clipped the top of a tree and finished almost 30 metres pin high right.
With the flag stick parked at the front of the green, the race was wide open, but McComb spoiled Van Niekerk’s chances to extend the play-off when his pitch shot cleared the hump at the front of the green, shot forward, hit the pin and dropped straight into the hole.
”I’m absolutely over the moon,” said the delighted McComb.” It was one of those shots you can hit a thousand times and never pull off again.
McComb was excited to sharing the good news with his sponsor, Dave Robinson from SHS Africa.
”I can’t wait to tell Dave the good news,” he said. ”I won the IGT Tour’s Race to Asian Q-School in September, but I struggled for a while
after winning at CMR. Dave stuck with me and it’s great to reward his support with another victory.”
”Ed Holding, my coach, has also been fantastic in keeping me positive and I owe my girlfriend Megan and her sister, Kerry, for coming out
and supporting me today. Their presence helped to keep me positive when things weren’t going too well.”
Van Niekerk came within a shot of forcing a play-off in the Battle of the Giants at Glendower last week, and the rookie from Wingate Park
took more inspiration from his second successive runner-up finish.
”You know, I had three second places before I won on the Race to Asian Q-School, so maybe I’m edging closer to another win,” the
Tuks Sport Golf Academy player said.
”I wanted to achieve a good level of consistency before I go to the Sunshine Tour’s Qualifying School next January, and it’s great to be in contention like this every week.
”Until you win, someone plays better than you. You have to look for the positives and take that away with you.”
