Africa Cup of Nations to be held at Randburg Hockey Stadium
PRAEGVILLE – The Africa Cup of Nations receives its media launch at the Randburg Sports Club.
The media launch of the Africa Cup of Nations Hockey tournament was held on 16 October at the Randburg Sports Club in Praegville. Marissa Langeni, CEO of the South African Hockey Association (SAHA) and Kelvin Watt, CEO of Transafrica Capital introduced the tournament which will be held at the Randburg Hockey Stadium from 23 October to 1 November.
Watt spoke positively about the state of hockey in South Africa, asserting that it was a growing, marketable sport with a strong development in the sport for both male and female athletes.
“The game of hockey is going through a revolution,” Watt stated.
He added that South Africa has a good chance to win the upcoming tournament suggesting, “We are our biggest opposition.”
The winner of the Africa Cup of Nations will qualify for the Rio 2016 Olympics. Langeni responded to questions regarding the recent controversy surrounding the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (Sascoc) by explaining that the winner of the Africa Cup of Nations will qualify according to International Olympic Committee (IOC) standards. The decision to allow the players to attend would then be up to Sascoc.
