Randburg Cricket Club SA4 team suffers defeat

PRAEGVILLE – Local cricket club is handed a sore defeat at hands of Puntans Hill Sports Club.

PRAEGVILLE – An up-and-down season for Randburg Cricket Club‘s SA4 team took another turn for the worse when they suffered a thumping defeat at the hands of Puntans Hill Sports Club.

Randburg hosted the game on a hot but slightly breezy 23 February. They won the toss and sent Puntans Hill in to bat first which seemed like the right decision when they had the visitors 78/4 at drinks.

However, a cracking century off 40 balls by the visiting captain knocked the wind right out of the Randburg attack. Puntans Hill finished their 35-over innings with 246/6.

Seven runs were needed per over but the Randburg batsmen were not up to the task. They were bowled all out for 62 in 22.4 overs.

“SA4 has had a bit of an up-and-down season – some great performances followed by some indifferent ones but they remain eighth on the log,” said Randburg’s club captain, Harry Lediga.

“We are hoping a few wins in the remainder of the season will push us to a mid-table finish.”

He said one of the things the team could take from the loss was to score runs faster. “We let too many dot balls go by and singles are just as important as boundaries.”

The SA4 team will next play at home against Old Parktonian Sports Club in what is seen as a local derby.

Below are the standings of Randburg Cricket Club’s teams in the Gauteng Cricket Board leagues as of 22 February:

Premier B: Third

Presidents A: Eighth

SU1: Third

SU4: Fifth

SU6: Fourth

SA1: First

SA3: Seventh

SA: Seventh

“The Randburg sides have been doing fairly well. We have missed chances in certain leagues to strengthen our positions in the top half of some of the leagues but we are doing well to catch up.”
