As always, the Sheila Fox Day proved a hit at Old Parktonian Bowls Club.
The annual women’s trips tournament on June 7 attracted players from all over the city.
They browsed the books and bowls accessories on sale before gathering around one of the bowling greens. Then, each with a bowl in hand, the 60 bowlers targeted a teddy bear club that committee member Eileen Breakey had placed in the centre. The bowl finishing closest to the bear would win.

While this was a lot of fun, it was still something to play for, and the bowlers laughed as they gave it their all. The little teddy bear was knocked over as their skills shone, but Jill Sinclair walked away with a ruffled but still beautiful bear she named after her son Jaye.
When it was time to play for real, bowlers put their game faces on. It did not stop a bit of banter and joking around, as is always the case at bowls tournaments.
A portion of the events proceeds and funds raised from vendors at the event went to Cradle of Hope – a shelter for women and girls in Krugersdorp – while the rest went to the club to cover costs.
“Besides being a club fundraiser it was a fun charity afternoon with prizes also awarded to all players,” Breakey said.
