The officers noticed the vehicle with a male occupant inside and, acting on their suspicion, moved in to investigate. They approached the car and conducted a search of the man and his vehicle. Their instincts proved correct when they discovered two small, clear zip-lock sachets containing what is believed to be cat, also known as methcathinone, concealed in his pockets.

Cat is a highly addictive stimulant that has become increasingly prevalent in Johannesburg’s townships and surrounding communities. The drug, which can be snorted, smoked or injected, is known to cause severe psychological dependence and has been linked to violent and erratic behaviour among users.

Rather than stopping there, officers pressed further. The suspect cooperated and led them to his home in Cosmo City, where the investigation uncovered a more significant stash of contraband. Inside the property, police found a bottle and a small bucket containing substances believed to be cat and crystal methamphetamine, commonly known as tik or crystal meth. Crystal meth is a powerfully addictive drug that has devastated communities across South Africa, and its presence alongside cat suggested the suspect may have been involved in more than simple personal use.

The JMPD Tactical Response Unit is a specialised policing unit deployed across Johannesburg to respond to high-risk situations and conduct proactive patrols in areas affected by crime. The unit’s visibility and swift action in the Honeydew area serve as a reminder that law enforcement officers remain committed to rooting out drug-related crime in the region.

Authorities have reiterated that the possession and distribution of illegal substances carry serious legal consequences and that those found in contravention of the law will be prosecuted to the full extent possible.
