Running club for homeless
RANDBURG – Homeless to run for self-fulfillment, employment and housing.
Soon the homeless of Randburg will be running through the streets, purely for leisure.
Mary Gillet-de Klerk, founder and CEO of Johannesburg Organisation of Services to the Homeless (Josh), announced on 5 August that the non-profit company is in the process of organising a running club for homeless people in Randburg.
“The running club is part of the process of enabling the homeless to change their view of themselves,” she explained.
“[It] is to challenge them to achieve small personal milestones, get fit, feel better about themselves and start to set new targets in other aspects of their lives.”
She added that the idea is based on the success of non-profit organisation Back on my Feet in the United States of America (USA), which enables homeless people to run in exchange for access to training, employment and housing resources.
However, before Randburg’s homeless hit the streets in this new sense they first need your donations of running gear including tracksuits, vests, running pants and running shoes.
Josh is a non-profit company based in Ferndale, aiming to link homeless people to soup kitchens, Randburg’s first homeless shelter, job skills training, self-created work and cheap apartments through a voucher scheme (see previous story) currently sold at Randburg Methodist Church, NG Randburg and Ferndale Bible Chapel.
