Women who Walk and councillor take a walk for spring
The spring walk in Ferndale aimed at taking back the beautiful neighbourhood one step at a time.
Aimed at creating safe, collaborative groups for women to get the blood pumping in a safe environment, Ward 104 councillor Emi Koekemoer held a spring walk with Women who Walk, on September 6.
Koekemoer explained that the walk was great, although it was one of their lower turnouts due to the Springboks match. “We’ve learned not to compete with a Bokke game, but I think consistency is key.”
She further explained that the purpose of the walk is to get the women of the community interacting again. “An engaged community is a safe community, because it deters criminal elements.”

The walks are done on the first Saturday of the month, but, at any point during a week when ladies feel like walking, they pop a message onto the group, and other ladies volunteer to walk with them. Beagle Watch security is also involved in the project, and they deploy a patrol vehicle to keep the ladies safe.

The ladies also sprinkled some flower seeds on the pavements during the walk. Koekemoer added that for the spring month, they thought it would be a great idea to plant some flower seeds.
“They were kindly sponsored by Mayford, just to beautify the area a bit. It gives people a sense of pride and ownership of a community when things look good and they were a part of creating that.”
