Joburg Water teams vanish after MMC’s site visit

Residents near the Bram Fischer Drive and Jan Smuts Avenue intersection are still waiting for repairs after city officials left the water leak site and failed to return.

City workers who were deployed to address a water leak near the intersection of Bram Fischer Drive and Jan Smuts Avenue in the Randburg CBD have abandoned the site without completing the work, leaving residents frustrated.

The leak was identified during Crum’s High Impact Service Delivery Programme last week, when MMC Luyiso Masuku visited the site alongside inspectors and officials from various government entities. At the time, Joburg Water teams were called in to assess the problem, and Masuku confirmed that ageing infrastructure was to blame.

She said a temporary solution would be put in place to close the valves while the city arranged a permanent repair. The MMC added that a formal notice would be issued to residents warning of a planned water interruption of up to three days, with the permanent fix expected to take place between the end of April and the beginning of May.

That deadline has now passed, and no notice has been issued to residents.

This is not the first time the city has failed to follow through on commitments relating to this intersection. The Randburg Sun has previously reported on the ongoing water leak and the lack of response from Joburg Water, with the issue having remained unresolved across multiple follow-ups.

Residents and road users continue to be affected while the city has yet to provide any update on when the repair will be carried out.

The Randburg Sun has reached out to Joburg Water for comment and is awaiting a response.
