RLM launches men’s health dialogue
We have come to realize that it is not only women who face challenges of abuse.
The Randfontein Local Municipality’s HIV/AIDS unit is set to embark on a men’s health community dialogue on 11 at the Ramosa Hall in Mohlakeng and on 17 July at the Badirile Clinic in Brandvlei.
According to the Unit’s Coordinator Phumla Maloisane, this is to raise awareness about the challenges that men face in their communities as well as those regarding their health.
‘The purpose of this dialogue is really to get men to speak up and state their challenges.
“Be they challenges of abuse from their partners, the stigma attached to them as men or general challenges they face in their households, this is the platform for that,” says Maloisane.
Maloisane says that they have decided to partner with the Department of Labour, the Randfontein SAPS, Brothers for Life and the South African National Council against Alcoholism (SANCA) in order to get their message across and tackle challenges that will be tabled.
“We have come to realize that it is not only women who face challenges of abuse and societal ills.
“In line with this, we have decided to partner with these stakeholders who will address their issues and perhaps help find possible ways of dealing with them.
“At the very same time, men need to know that they have support when they report matters of abuse.
“They need to know that we are aware of gender-based violence and are dedicated to fighting it,” says Maloisane.
She adds that they will be discussing the issue of male circumcision, HIV and AIDS, alcohol and drug abuse as well as the integration of ex-offenders into communities.
More information on the event will be published once it becomes available.
