A thief was caught red handed and stopped in his tracks during a botched house robbery attempt in Helikon Park on 4 July at approximately 4 am.

The owners of the house were on holiday in Margate at the time of the incident.

According to EPR Operations Manager Mac van Zyl, reaction officer Dewald Dicks was patrolling the area when he spotted the suspicious man trying to gain entrance into the property’s garage.

“Following his instincts, he approached the man inside the yard for questioning.

“The suspect tried to flee on foot but Dicks gave chase.

“Dicks managed to catch up with the suspect and immediately apprehended him,” says van Zyl.

He adds that Dicks then searched the suspect and found housebreaking equipment in his possession.

He arrested the suspect and handed hi over to police officers upon their arrival at the scene.

According to van Zyl, the same property was broken into a few months ago and bicycles were stolen from the garage.

He says that the suspect caught could be the very same suspect who stole the bicycle on the previous occasion.
