Randfontein Traffic Department has declared war against a so-called blue-light apparently gang operating in the streets of Randfontein pretending to be police and traffic officers and hijacking motorists, especially on the R559, or Zuurbekom Road as it is commonly known.
According to Randfontein Traffic Chief Kenny Mampondo, the Zuurbekom Road has become a thorn in the side of authorities lately with numerous cases of theft, robbery, hijacking and even murder reported along the road recently..
“Apart from the day-to-day road rule benders, it has come to our attention that there is a blue-light gang operating in the area,” says Mampondo.
“By this I mean that criminals impersonate police or traffic officers with blue lights and stop unsuspecting motorists to rob them of their cars,” says Mampondo.
According to him, this has been going on for some time.
“We cannot have people impersonating officers of the law and hijacking people on our roads.
“We will not have it on our watch.
“We will embark on numerous road blocks and search cars to ensure that that our roads are safe.
“We will also follow leads with regards to the blue-light gang and we will leave no stone unturned in our effort to find them and put a stop to their activities.”
