Government has issued a warning to residents after it emerged that some if its departmental logs and letterheads are being fraudulently used by bogus charity organisations in a bid to scam people out of their hard earned money.
According to Government and Communications Information System CEO Phumla Williams, this problem is widespread to the extent that it endangers above the board charitable organisations who depend on donations.
“It has come to our attention that people use government departments’ logos and bogus letterheads in an attempt to solicit money from unsuspecting business people.
“It’s a pity at how many people actually fall for this and donate a lot of money thinking that they are helping out organisations that are in need.
“Little do they know that that are being taken advantage of,” says Williams.
She adds that people are encouraged to work with law enforcement agencies and report any scams that they are aware of in order for the perpetrators to be investigated and for such practices to be stopped.
“If you suspect that you are being scammed or think something is fishy with the organisation that is trying to solicit money from you, you must not hesitate to report this to the police,” says Williams.
