Westonaria loses its former Mayor

Khumalo died at Leratong Hospital on 15 August.

The former Westonaria Local Municipality Executive Mayor and Gauteng Deputy Provincial Chairperson of the South African Local Government Association (SALGA) Agnes Khumalo has passed away after a long illness.

Khumalo died at Leratong Hospital on 15 August.

According to West Rand District Municipality Executive Mayor Mpho Nawa, Khumalo was one of the longest serving Executive Mayors in the West Rand District and a leader in the womens’ struggle for gender equality.

“We are saddened by the death of one of our own.

“We wish to express our heartfelt condolences to the passing on of the former Mayor Agnes Khumalo.

“She was a committed community leader in the youth and civic struggles during the transitional local governance period in the early 1990’s.

“We really do sympathies with her family during this difficult time,” says Nawa.

According to Westonaria Local Municipality Executive Mayor Nonkoliso Tundzi, this came as a shock for everyone within the municipality.

“She will be dearly missed as she had contributed a lot to the functioning of the municipality”

Khumalo’s memorial service will be held at the Municipal Banquet Hall in Westonaria on 22 August at 2pm

She will be buried on Saturday, 24 August 2013 at 7am at the Westonaria cemetery.
