Taxi overturns in horrific accident

Four people were injured after a driver ignored a stop sign and smashed into a taxi.

Three passenger were seriously injured and one sustained minor injuries after a fully laden taxi overtuned and landed on its roof in a massive accident after it was hit by a Mercedes-Benz at the corner of Village and 12th Streets.

It is understood that the taxi was travelling from the Randfontein taxi rank and was heading to the Leratong taxi rank when the accident occurred.

According to Randfontein Traffic Chief Kenny Mampondo the driver of the Mercedes Benz was traveling on Village Street and ignored a traffic sighn, which led to the accident.

He adds that officials responding to the scene had to cut the taxi’s roof open in order to remove injured passengers.

They were then transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Meanwhile a local resident has written to the herald shortly after the accident saying that the lack of visible road signs in the area is a concern and is a contributing factor to accidents happening at this notorious intersection.

“We have asked the municipality to replace stolen stop signs and paint fading lines on the roads and to date, nothing has been done.

“It has gotten to the point were we are afraid to reverse out of our driveways because our road has become a racetrack due to the lack of law enforcement,” says the resident who does not wish to be named.
