Local man crushed under train

A Local man tried to get across the railway line of foot ahead of an oncoming train.

A local man has died after he was run down by a train at the Randfontein train station at approximately 7am on 5 May.

According to information gathered at the scene, it is believed that the man who is said to be in 30’s was in a hurry when he decided to cross the railway tracks on foot to get to another platform where he would board a train from Randfontein to Johannesburg.

Unfortunately it seems he misjudged the speed of the oncoming train and was run over.

According to an eyewitness at the scene, the train blew its horn as it approached in an effort to warn the man who was trying to get across the tracks.

“The man seemed to get a fright when the train blew its horn and paused.

“He might have made it if he hadn’t,” says the witness who does not wish to be named.

When emergency services personnel arrived on the scene, they had the gruesome task to remove the man’s remains from under the train.

This is the second incident where a person has died in a train incident in recent months.

The herald has contacted Gauteng Metrorail spokesperson Lillian Mofokeng with regard to safety measures implemented at their stations, but at the time of publishing, no comment has been forthcoming.
