Warning: New scam emerges
Public made aware of criminals using more creative ways than ever to steal money.
Don’t get caught out by fraudsters who promise you work and then steal your money, a resident and job seeker warned.
Nomonde Ngosi, 46, was without work from November last year. She advertised in the newspaper to see if she couldn’t find another job in the hospitality industry.
“I was so happy when a doctor who called himself Jacob, phoned me on Friday (March 6) and told me that I had been accepted for work at Leratong Hospital as a cleaner. He told me that I had to transfer R750 via a money transfer at a well known supermarket for my uniform. I had no reason to be suspicious, the man was friendly, polite and professional,” Ngosi explained.
The man also told Ngosi to go to the hospital the next Monday to start working. Only upon her arrival at the hospital did Ngosi realize that she had been scammed out of her money.
“The guards at the gate told me that they did not know of any doctors doing any hiring for hospital and that they did not need any new cleaners. I immediately went to the police to open a case,” Ngosi said.
When the herald tried phoning the so called doctor, Jacob on the cell number he contacted Ngosi on, the phone was off as it has been shortly after the scam on Ngosi.
Police have not made any arrests yet but the public should be aware of these criminals using more creative ways than ever to steel from the people.
“I am very unhappy, I still don’t have work and now I have lost some of the little money I have as well. Don’t get caught out like me,” Ngosi concluded.
