A new South African Social Security Association (SASSA) scam has emerged in Randfontein and a 32-year-old victim was scammed out of his grant money as a result.
Subsequently, the Randfontein Police have issued a warning regarding the scam.
Captain Appel Ernst, the Randfontein Police spokesperson, said the person behind the scam is believed to be employed by SASSA.
The victim alleged he went to the Ramosa Hall in Mohlakeng to withdraw his grant. He was allegedly attended to by a man who requested fingerprint identification after inserting the SASSA card into a machine.
The person who assisted him allegedly said his money could not be withdrawn and referred him to the SASSA offices in the centre of Randfontein.
Shortly after, the victim made enquires at the city office, where he was told his entire grant had been withdrawn the same day.
The Randfontein Police Management urges SASSA grant recipients not to give their cards to any person that might use the card for fraudulent transactions.
“Make sure the person who assists you is an employee of the department and ask for assistance as soon as you see an error on the machine where you withdraw your funds,” Ernst said.
