A school security guard has been arrested after lying about leaving his post to go to sleep while criminals targeted the school.
The 33-year-old guard faces perjury charges and has already made a brief appearance in the Westonaria Magistrates’ Court.
According to Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, the Bekkersdal Police spokesperson, the suspect was working as a security guard at Izanokhanyo Primary School, Simunye. He apparently decided to go home and sleep, leaving his post empty. While he was away, burglars allegedly broke into the school.
The next morning, the guard discovered the break-in. He did not want to tell his employer he had left his post, so gave a false statement to the police when they were on scene, saying he was robbed at gunpoint by three unknown men.
“All necessary information was gathered from the crime scene and through an investigation led by detective Constable Kagiso Ramphore, it was revealed the suspect had lied under oath,” Lefakane said.
The suspect was then arrested and charged with perjury.
“[The] community should refrain from making false statements as it creates unnecessary costs and it’s time consuming when there are serious cases to be attended to,” said Colonel Mbangwa Nkhwashu, the Bekkersdal Police station commander.
