Speaking at this occasion was Oupa Koapeng, Gauteng West’s acting regional director, who reiterated that the district aims to reclaim its position at the top in the province and country next year. The Gauteng West district placed sixth in the country and fourth in the province this year.

“I am standing here with mixed feelings. We did not do as well as expected, and we aimed for a 100 per cent pass rate like RHS, who achieved this for the 10th time.

But we can not achieve our goal without stakeholders such as businesses, churches and parents.”

Phatuxolo Nodada, BusMark CEO, spoke of the 4th Industrial Revolution in his motivational talk to the achievers, saying that this revolution will not be about conventional jobs such as mining or teaching. He warned of a time when artificial intelligence, in the form of robots, will take over, saying, “If you study for a career, choose a career that is relevant to the future.”

Benford Mokoatle from Gold Alliance spoke about a variety of opportunities the mining house can offer in terms of bursaries and internship programmes. “The world is your oyster, it depends on you to make a difference, but rather choose a career aimed at economic development,” he said.

In his keynote address, Mzi Khumalo, Rand West City Local Municipality Executive Mayor, called on achievers to be economic freedom fighters and cadres who are armed with education.

Council Speaker Violet Nqina Mzondeki with Charles Moeketsi Kgomo from Simunye Secondary School, the Top Rand West City matriculant.

“Economic freedom fighters think differently, they are those who go to school to create jobs. We need to change the status quo and do things differently.” He pointed out the achievement of both learners and teachers, referring to it as the age of hope due to hard work.
