Police out in full force – 162 weekend arrests

"I will not rest until the West Rand Cluster is safe and declared a crime-free area," Major General Kekana said.

This past weekend law-enforcement officers in the West Rand Cluster secured 162 arrests, which included suspects in cases of rape and possession of gold-bearing material.

“The police was out in full force and arrested suspects for numerous offences, such as attempted theft of motor vehicle, theft, rape, malicious damage to property, possession of gold-bearing material, illegal mining, trespassing, assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm and domestic-related assault,” Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, Bekkersdal Police spokesperson said.

The arrests were secured during various crime-prevention operations throughout the West Rand Cluster.

Suspected stolen property and substances suspected to be drugs were recovered and seized. Minor offences were also policed which saw suspects being arrested for being undocumented and liquor-related offences.

“Though the Social Crime Prevention Unit conducts awareness campaigns on a daily basis, rape is still a concern. The rights of women and children are still being violated,” Lefakane said.

All arrested suspects will appear in the respective magistrates’ courts today,12 March.

The Cluster commander, Major General Papile Kekana applauded the members for their dedication and hard work, and thanked the community for working with the police to ensure that perpetrators are brought to book .
