The Bekkersdal Police are warning the public about a cellphone scam doing the rounds.
Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, Bekkersdal Police spokesperson said on Wednesday (4 April), “We have been experiencing a number of cases of people being robbed of their money through their personal phones.
“The thugs call unsuspecting cellphone users, pretending to be from a particular network. They tell their victims that they have received a request for a sim swap on that number and that the victims should verify the number.
“Later, after confirming the number, they notice that their number is no longer in use. On further investigation, the victims discover that withdrawals and electronic purchases have been made from the account.

“We are therefore appealing to the public to never respond to cellphone calls relating to sim-swap requests and to never give personal information over the telephone,” Lefakane said.
