Mohlakeng, Toekies clubs excel at Comrades
Members from two running clubs in Mohlakeng and Toekomsrus gave their all at this year's 'tough' Comrades.
Mohlakeng-based Colossus Athletics and Aerobics Club as well as Toekomsrus Athletics Club (TAC) took on the 2018 Comrades Marathon with courage and passion.
Although the route has been described as tough, Frans Mola from Simunye, who runs for Gold Fields was once again the first Rand West City finisher in a quick time of under six-and-a-half hours while Lesotho citizen Mamphane Maluke, who runs for Mohlakeng Colossus was the first runner from the team to finish, in a time of nine hours and 57 seconds.
“We are delighted to have had all of our members finish the race with no injuries and no bailing out,” said Charmaine Evans, a police officer who runs for TAC. She finished in a time of 11 hours and 57 seconds.
Other TAC members to cross the finish line were Clinton Evans, Kgosimang Seleke (a teacher at Simunye Primary School), Lesedi Mphatsoe (the principal at FJ Wells in Bhonwgeni), Faizel Bhana and Koos Louw.
Mohlakeng Colossus had a total of 14 runners but only 11 of them managed to finish.
“Kgomotso Zachius could not finish as she became ill on the route, and Nelson Ramosika bailed out in Drummond. Mamphane Maluke, running his debut Comrades, did well and said he was excited to be in front of a huge crowd and cheering supporters,” said Vusi Mathiya, chairman of Colossus Athletics Club.
Other Colosssus finishers are Budas Mothelezi (10 hours, 45 seconds), Lerato Tsiane (10 hours, 30 seconds), Njabulo Mavuka (11 hours, 50 seconds), Tatolo Kokame (10 hours, 47 seconds) and Boitumelo Banda (11 hours, 57 seconds).
Another local runner is Lekgotla Lesie, a male nurse from Finsbury, who finished his debut run in 11 hours, 58 seconds.
