Victims robbed at gunpoint for shoes

Manhunt launched for a group of suspects after three people were robbed at gunpoint for their cellphones and shoes during the weekend.

Bekkersdal Police have a launched a manhunt for at least four suspects after they allegedly robbed three people of their cellphones and shoes on Friday, 3 August.

Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, Bekkersdal Police spokesperson, confirmed that the incident took place at about 7.30pm.

She explained that three victims were walking along Tumelo Drive in Simunye, shortly before they were accosted by a group of suspects.

“A vehicle, a red VW Golf with four occupants, stopped in front of them. One man produced a firearm and allegedly fired one shot into the ground.

He then demanded that the victims hand over their phones and takkies before driving off.”

She added the matter was reported to the police, but the suspects are still at large.

“We are appealing to the community to refrain from walking in the open veld and secluded areas as they become prey to these perpetrators. The community must be vigilant and report any suspicious acts in the surroundings,” Lefakane added.
