#WisdomWednesday: Stay safe on the roads, warns Traffic Chief

Kenny Mampondo, chief of the Rand West City Traffic Department, warned the public that all South African roads will be busy during the coming long weekend.
“Road users should prepare for road carnage,” Mampondo warned.
“A lot of people will be travelling for the long weekend and that means that roads will be flooded with road users and the number of accidents tends to increase during this time.”
“While we as law enforcement are doing our jobs, road users should also take precautionary steps to ensure the safety of all road users. That includes motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians,” Mampondo said.
Mampondo said that there is also a growing trend of road rage amongst motorists.
“Road users should prepare to be extra patient while travelling this weekend, because road anger can lead to fights that could’ve been avoided.”
Mampondo’s tips to stay safe on the road this long weekend:
1. It’s important to take regular breaks and to stop for something to eat when you feel tired when travelling long distances.
2. Don’t drink and drive because it endangers everyone on the road.
3. It can’t be emphasised enough that speed kills. Motorists should always adhere to speed limits.
4. Pedestrians are also road users and motorists should respect their safety as well. Remember to always give way at pedestrian crossings.
Mampondo emphasised that dockets will be opened for road users who drive over the speed limit and the magistrate will determine the fine.
