#Women'sDay: A 38-year-old from Greenhills says women should stand up for themselves!
There’s a saying that goes ‘You strike a woman, you strike a rock’ – this is certainly what Kekeletso (Keke) Mokhine of Greenhills lives by.
The 38-year-old Keke said women everywhere in South Africa should not celebrate Women’s Day on 9 August but take on the struggle every day to empower others.
Keke, who is a successful woman, said she is where she is today because of her strengths.
“I cannot say someone put me where I am,” she said.
Keke said that all her life, she has lived by the firm belief that as a woman, she had to take the bull by the horns and do everything in her power to secure her success.
She said one of the problems is women who are struggling with their independence
“Some women do not want to do things for themselves – they want things to be done for them. Women need to know they do not have to depend so much on men, because the problem is that in the end, we feel like we owe them something, which may lead to being taken advantage of and abused.
Keke said in order to avoid this, she believes that women should stand up for one another.
“Every day is a Women’s Day, because women get abused daily and we cannot only be focused on that day once a year – for me, that does not make sense.”
Keke suggested that there should be groups and associations within communities that ensure women are empowered throughout the year.
“This empowerment should not only come through talks and motivational speeches, but through the economy as well,” she said.
Keke said she would like to advise women to get up and learn skills so that they can use them to stand up for the dis-empowered.
“Be confident and be everything you want, no matter how many times you get turned down, because it does not mean that you are a failure. Just keep on moving!” Keke said.
Asked about where she drew her strength and inspiration from, Keke praised both her mother and her late aunt.
“I want to say that we are so blessed to have been created this way, because we have the same capabilities as men. Let us use our strengths to empower ourselves, and most importantly, let us stop depending on men. Let us depend on ourselves and on God,” Keke added.
