She said information was received that two vehicles were travelling from a mining company towards the Randfontein area loaded with cut up steel (scrap).

“The information was followed up and teams found the steel at a scrap metal company in Krugersdorp. On arrival at this scrap yard, we found that the two vehicles, a blue Toyota Hilux bakkie and a white Nissan MP3 bakkie were standing in the queue to weigh the scrap.

“Six suspects were arrested – three from the blue Toyota Hilux and three from the white Nissan bakkie – as they could not give the police valid reasons for having the steel in their possession. They have been charged with being in possession of suspected stolen property.

“The security company at a mine was contacted, and they confirmed that the steel belonged to the mine.”

All the suspects are expected to appear in the Randfontein Magistrates’ Court soon.
