Mandrax seized, illegal immigrants arrested

A joint police operation held on major national roads in the West Rand yielded many arrests, even a Mandrax drug bust.

Confiscation of drugs and arrests of undocumented persons were just some of the successes achieved during a joint Crime Prevention Operation held on the N12, R28 and R599 last week.

Joining hands were members of the police, the Rand West Traffic Department, the Community Police Forum (CPF) and various patrollers.

Mandrax tablets were also found during the operation.

According to Sergeant Audrey Sefara, Westonaria Police spokesperson, the operation was held from from 9am to 2pm on Friday, 14 June.

“One traffic fine was issued, three people were arrested for being in possession of drugs (188 Mandrax tablets), one unlicensed liquor outlet was closed, nine undocumented persons were arrested, and 305 vehicles, 629 people and 132 pieces of luggage were searched.

Youth were also involved in the operation as they commemorated Youth Month.

“The Gauteng Department of Education also joined the operation, handing out pamphlets to motorists in order to create awareness of the safety of the youth in celebration of Youth Month.”

Sefara added they are still concerned about the number of hijackings taking place on these national roads.
