WATCH: Police warn of daily R28 protests

'Workers are planning to protest every day by closing the R28 and burning tyres' – Police.

Police say they are monitoring protests on the R28 next to Bekkersdal that have started on Monday, 28 September. Motorists are advised to use alternatives routes for the time being.

According to Warrant Officer Peter Masooa, West Rand District and stand-in Bekkersdal Police spokesperson, protests flared up again on Tuesday, 29 September.

He cited the contractor not paying the workers who installed electricity in the Bekkersdal shacks as the reason for the protests.

Workers are planning to protest every day by closing the R28 and burning tyres. No serious incidents were reported and the police will continue to monitor the situation,” concluded Masooa.

The Herald received footage of the protests on Monday, 28 September. Watch below.
