Woman, 26, raped in veld: Suspect on the run

'She was ambushed by the suspect who was armed with a knife' – police.

Bekkersdal Police said a rape suspect is on the run after attacking a 26-year-old woman in an open veld in Simunye over the weekend.

According to Sergeant Linkie Lefkane, Bekkersdal Police spokesperson, a manhunt has since been launched for the balaclava-wearing suspect.

“It is alleged that the woman was walking in the veld when she was ambushed by the thug who was armed with a knife. He demanded a cellphone and money.

But when the victim could not produce anything, the man allegedly raped her. He fled on foot afterwards,” Lefakane said, adding that an investigation is under way.

Lieutenant Colonel Andile Moshani, the acting Bekkersdal Police station commander said although the suspect is unknown at this stage, police will not rest until he faces the full might of the law.

Moshani also urged the community to avoid walking in unsafe places or visiting friends at night as perpetrators are out to prey on victims.

“Your safety also remains your responsibility,” Moshani added.
