Early Christmas present for the poverty-stricken elderly

'We're doing this because we want to show them that we care about them.'

The Meals on Wheels organisation handed over 100 food parcels to poverty-stricken elderly people in Randfontein as an early Christmas treat on Tuesday, 1 December.

The handover was made in Homelake, Mohlakeng, Toekomsrus, Kocksoord and the old mining village Robin Park.

Management of the organisation said cooking and treating the senior citizens to a Christmas lunch like they usually do was not possible due to Covid-19 protocols.

We thought we should rather have food parcels to avoid any Covid-19 related risks,” said Bruce Stevens, coordinator of the initiative.

Bruce added that the parcels consisted of basic items including maize meal, rice, sugar, cooking oil, pilchards, baked beans and chips.

Bruce Olien, treasure of the organisation said the idea was to spread hope among the beneficiaries.

We’re doing this because we want to show them that we care about them. We do this regularly,” Bruce said.

The organisation also thanked the following sponsors: Brazil Spurette; Pick n Pay (Helikon Park); Donny’s Stevens, LPG Gas; Sechel’s Funeral Directors, Maggi and Rainbow Chicken.
