Aged 103 and still loves comics

'As a family we are grateful to God that we still have her with us, especially during this time of Covid-19'.

At the age of 103, Maswabi Maimane still loves her comics.

On 14 November, at least five generations of Maimane family members, including seven grandchildren and one great grandchild came to visit granny Maswabi at her beloved home in Raleratata Street to celebrate the big milestone.

In a year marked by a pandemic when elderly citizens in particular are vulnerable, one of Mohlakeng’s eldest has no fear.

She was born in Vereeniging and came to Randfontein in 1941 where she tied the knot with one Kate Frederick.

“She was once employed at Aranda Textiles and also had done domestic work on and around the West Rand,” said her daughter, Dolly Maimane. Dolly is one of five children, but only she and her brother Abel have survived.

My mom is always soft spoken and has so much love for her grandchildren. She still recognises many of them. She is a devoted Christian and loves listening to Christian programmes on the radio.

“As a family we are grateful to God that we still have her with us, especially during this time of Covid-19. We also want to thank Councillor Nozi Mapena for the cake and blanket from Social Development.”
