Mom of Herald freelancer passes away

Mohlakeng resident and mother to Herald freelancer passes away after a long illness and old age.

Elizabeth Kedibone Moeng, a Mohlakeng resident and mother to Herald freelancer Raymond Moeng passed away after a long illness and old age at Leratong Hospital on Boxing Day.

Moeng said his mother was a former auxiliary nurse in Randfontein, a part-time teacher in Mmamusa in Schweizer Reinecke, and a general worker at Friendship Haven Old Age Home. She was born on 2 May 1930 and had a deep passion for health matters.

“She was cautious with any medication she took and received it with sheer scrutiny, even in her old age,” he said.

She was a devoted member of the St Paul Anglican Church where she participated in the Mother’s Union. She was a member of the Mother’s Union Choir that scooped a lot of titles under the baton of the late Thelma Chawe, and she was one of the founding members of the Genesis Guild under Father Tim Mncube.”

‘Tolo’, as she was also fondly known, loved sports.

“She was a big fan of boxing, and listened to coverage and commentary on the radio when her boxing idol and American legend, Muhammed Ali was in the ring. At the time people used to wake up as early as 4am to listen to radio coverage of the sport. She also had soft spot for Kaizer Chiefs and was mad about soapies, including The Bold and the Beautiful and Days of Our Lives.

She was an avid reader of publications like the Sunday Times. Although she criticised my articles in the Herald she was the one who supported me during my journalism studies.”

She was buried with strict Covid-19 protocols on 30 December at the Zenzele Cemetery.

Moeng concluded, “The Moeng, Mabote and Mooi families would like to thank the community and Rainbow Mother’s Union formations for all their contributions”.
